After the Nazi invasion of France during World War II, Gretl Glogau and her partner, a communist intellectual, fled to Marseilles, where many people gathered in hopes of leaving Europe. There they befriended Wifredo Lam. The three were able to escape to Cuba, and they remained close friends. Gretl knew of Lam’s financial troubles, and purchased two paintings from him. Once she moved to New York with her husband, she gave this painting to her sister, Elizabeth Glogau Estrin, who helped the couple get settled in the city. It has remained in the family since.
